Why Hydration Matters More Than You Think This Summer

Why Hydration Matters More Than You Think This Summer

Nicole Dunlap

Summer heat, longer days, more sweat, and more time outside all add up to your body losing water and minerals faster than you may realize. And if you're someone I work with on hormone or fertility health, this matters even more. Proper hydration supports healthy cervical mucus, circulation to reproductive organs, detoxification of excess hormones through the liver and kidneys, and stable energy and mood through the heat of the season.

Dehydration doesn't always show up as thirst first. It often shows up as fatigue, headaches, irritability, constipation, or that "wired but tired" feeling by mid-afternoon. Water alone isn't always enough. You also need electrolytes (sodium, potassium, and magnesium) to actually hold onto that water at the cellular level.

This month, let's talk about how to hydrate smarter, starting with a recipe you can make at home, plus a few of my favorite electrolyte products if you want something ready-made.

DIY Natural Electrolyte Drink

Simple, whole-food ingredients, and you probably have most of them in your kitchen right now.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups filtered water
  • Juice of 1 lemon or lime
  • 1/4 teaspoon high-quality sea salt or Himalayan pink salt
  • 1 tablespoon raw honey or 100% maple syrup
  • Pinch of cream of tartar (optional, for a potassium boost)
  • Splash of orange juice or a few muddled berries for flavor and a little extra potassium (optional)

Directions:
Whisk everything together until the salt and honey dissolve. Pour over ice and sip throughout the morning or after spending time outside in the heat. Store any extra in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.

Why this works:
Sea salt provides sodium and trace minerals, citrus and cream of tartar provide potassium, and a touch of natural sugar helps your body absorb sodium and water more efficiently. This follows the same principle used in oral rehydration solutions.

My Go-To Store-Bought Electrolytes

On days when I don't have time to make my own, these are the three brands I reach for and recommend to clients. All are sugar-free and made without artificial sweeteners or dyes.

Transparent Labs Hydrate:
A sugar-free electrolyte powder with a full mineral profile (sodium, potassium, magnesium, and calcium), plus taurine and coconut water powder to support absorption. A great choice if you're active, training regularly, or want a comprehensive electrolyte formula.

Nectar Electrolytes:
A minimalist, low-sodium formula made with organic fruit flavoring and citrate-based minerals. It's a gentle, everyday option if you're sensitive to higher-sodium blends or simply want something clean and refreshing to sip throughout the day.

Santa Cruz Paleo Electrolytes:
A whole-food-based electrolyte blend made with Himalayan pink salt, sea salt, magnesium glycinate, and potassium chloride. It's my pick if you want something similar to a homemade recipe in a convenient grab-and-go packet, and it comes in a wide variety of flavors.

I'm not affiliated with any of these companies. I simply love their products and am passionate about recommending products that I genuinely use and trust.
